Day One - Minor Characters FTW

Hey guis, :D Guess what? The greatest month, and the greatest month-long holiday of the year, has finally dawned.

NaNoWriMo!!!1!!1one!

Started work around 3:45 this morning. Eight pages in, and absolutely euphoric about what I have so far. It's a vast improvement on my 2006 and 2007 NaNos - intelligible where 2006's was not, going places as 2007's never did.

Finally getting a chance to explore that wonderful thing called "character development" in prose. It's been a long time since I created characters without outlining them to death first. Today's character is named Griselda. She's turning out out to be a strange amalgamation of narcissism and practicality, flaunting a silk red cloak already smudged by a display of her carelessness; fearful, in what seems a most grating and damsel-in-distress-ingly way of the elves that live down in the gorge, until you ask and she informs you that it's not the elves she fears but her mother learning that she was within a league of them. And she is athletic, which was the last thing I expected. But she's sprinting about and tackling MCs like no one's business. And in skirts and a silk red cloak to boot!

I'm so happy. This is the first time I've ever been so happy with, or loved, a story so much at the outset. It's a rare and wonderful feeling. I'm treasuring it like a newborn child, :D

As a side note, I am beginning to loathe the word "cloak". It's never "cloak", it's always "she drew back the hood of her clock" or "he shook his cloack free of mud". What is this despicable thing, "cloack"? Get out on my novel.
